A contemporary kitchen stands as a hallmark of innovation and functionality, characterised by its clean lines, open spaces, and minimalist aesthetic. In this article, we explore the latest trends and innovations that are defining contemporary kitchens. Guided by STORI Brand Manager Shaunagh Devlin, we delve into key elements such as sustainability, smart technology, and versatile design features that cater to the demands of today’s homeowners.
What would you say is the definition of a ‘contemporary kitchen’?
A contemporary kitchen is all about clean lines, open spaces, and a smart fuss-free design which combines functionality and minimalism. Instead of intricate detailing, it leans towards a sleek, uncluttered look, seamlessly flowing into dining and living areas for a modern, effortless feel.

Pembridge – Reed Green Kitchen
What are the latest trends and innovations in contemporary kitchens?
Recent trends in contemporary kitchens are all about sustainability, innovation, and smart-tech. This includes eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient appliances, and smart home technology that allows users to control lighting, temperature, and kitchen devices through their smartphones or voice commands. Innovations such as touchless taps, induction cooktops, and multifunctional islands that serve as both cooking and socialising spaces have gained popularity.
Open shelving is also trending, making it easier to grab what you need while giving the space a light, airy feel to the space. The use of materials like quartz and concrete for countertops and backsplashes is also on the rise, offering durability along with a modern look.

What are the current trends driving popularity in this area of design, and which aspects are seeing a decline in interest?
Currently, matte finishes are indeed trending, as they offer a more subtle, understated appearance compared to glossy finishes. Matte cabinetry provides a softer aesthetic and conceals fingerprints and smudges more effectively than gloss. Contemporary matte cabinetry also offers versatility in terms of design, as it works well with different materials and textures such as the use of timber doors as accent doors.
On the flip side, overly ornate designs and very dark colour schemes that can make a space feel cramped are becoming less popular. Instead, homeowners are favouring lighter, more neutral palettes that reflect a brighter, airy feel.

What elements should a contemporary kitchen have, or is this up to interpretation?
There’s always room for personal style, but a few key features really define a contemporary kitchen:
Minimalistic Design: An emphasis on simplicity in cabinetry, countertops, and hardware is key, and is often best achieved through clean slab door designs, especially handleless designs and integrated appliances for a seamless, modern look.
Open Concept Layout: Contemporary kitchens often blend into nearby living spaces, making it easy to cook, entertain and connect all in one place.
Functional Islands: Modern kitchen islands serve multiple purposes, from prep space to dining areas, often incorporating storage and appliances.
Natural Light: Large windows or skylights are embraced to promote a bright atmosphere, connecting the indoors with the outdoors.
Smart Technology: Integrating appliances that offer convenience and efficiency is essential, along with smart lighting and climate control.
